With the holiday season upon us, discounts are widespread in the big box stores and online. This is great, but doesn’t help when shopping for quality handmade or locally made gifts. The prices are usually higher, and the profit margin is so low that a sale usually mean the artist or designer/maker takes a loss. Well, I have good news! I’ve been comparing prices as I shop this holiday season, and I have found that much of the time, handmade is priced very closely to mass produced, or sometimes even cheaper. Here are a few of my favorites:
These lovely pillows are handmade by Olivia, and are currently listed in her Etsy shop, luvPersia. I know Olivia (and Persia) in person, and if objects can radiate positive energy from their maker, anything she makes definitely will! She has plenty of other lovely handmade items in her shop, but since I mentioned pillows, where else can you get a handmade, one of a kind pillow for $10.?!
Looking for organic, handmade bath and body products? Laurie makes a ton of them, and they are for sale in her Etsy shop at very reasonable prices. Great as stocking stuffers, single item gifts, or piled in a basket! She has lip balms for as low as $3.50! There are also plenty of lotions, soaps, salves, and much more in her Eucalypto Organics shop!
If you’ve never tried cold process soaps, think of the ultra-expensive french clay, lavender, oatmeal, or olive oil soaps, that smell divine and make your skin feel like a baby’s bottom. Melissa from Penori makes that type of soap, as well as an array of other bath and body products that she sells in her Etsy shop. These make ideal gifts for anyone— with scents like chocolate, margarita, oatmeal cookie and many more. Everything in the shop is handmade by Melissa!
Tess and Ivy… where to start? I was hesitant to include this Etsy shop because it’s amazing, and I wanted to keep it to myself! Cathey turns vintage wood bowls into works of art. She paints a black background and then hundreds of perfect little dots in coordinating colors, and finishes the pieces with a protective clear coat. Absolutely beautiful, unique shop, and you simply can’t beat her prices.
The above four shops are a very small sample of my favorites, and can all be found on Etsy. The first two, luvPersia and Eucalypto Organics, are located in Humboldt, Co, CA. I know both of the owners personally, so I can vouch for the handmade nature of their products—and the fact that they are both extremely lovely ladies, inside and out. The next two, Penori and Tess and Ivy, are both fellow members of the All Handmade by ME Team. I have had the pleasure of getting to know them over the last few months and I think they are both amazing as well, and their handmade items are at the top of my wish list this year!
I wear many hats, but often throw them out the window and do whatever feels right. “I may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I’d rather be someone’s shot of tequila anyway!” —Unknown
